I exported my media so Data Protector doesn't longer recognize it. This media have all expired data but Now I'd like to add it to DP again. I'm not going to keep database of the media. I'm not able to format, recycle, ... and other operations on this media.

Can you suggest me to readd this media to my free pool?

Backup protection

Im a newbie in Data Protector. Pls help me to understand.

I have full backup every Sunday and incremental Monday through Saturday. I need backup copies for 2 weeks. What protection period should I set? 2 week for all job or 2 week for incremental and 3 week for full backup copy?

values about tape usage

1- I'd like to know where to look for size of specific tape which I typed when it's been formatted the first time.

2- I don't understand values about usage size which I see on tapes (tape properties, 'usage' tab), for example for a specific tape LTO-6 (2.5 TB, copressed until to 6.25 TB ) I have :

1472684 (100%)  usage

0 (0%) free

But when I analyze data on tape in 'objects' tab (tape properties) and I sum their sizes, the result is about 4 GB data.

Why I have this meaningless indication?! How I have to read this value?

thanks and regards

Is Data Protector EFS aware ?

Windows NTFS offers an embedded encryption system called EFS (Encrypting File System)

When activated on specific folders/files, the system encrypts/decrypts on the fly, transparently for users of the File Systems (given the presented account has necessary permissions)

Regarding Backup though, this transparency is not desirable, because if the backup behave as a standard user, files will be decrypted in the backup process and will have to be re-encrypted on the restore process.

This poses problem of security and CPU resources.

In order to workaround these issues, Microsoft provides a specific set of APIs (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363783.aspx) that can be used by backup software in order to backup / restore encrypted files in a "raw" manner, as there are, bypassing the on the fly process of decryption / encryption.

Backup software able to use these APIs are calle "EFS AWARE"

=> QUESTION : is Data Protector EFS aware ??

Post-exec script: (.bat file)

Hello

Can someone give me ideas in writting a .bat file as a post exec script?
the script should put a flag(file attribute) with timestamp on the latest backed up mointpoints.

I could just do these simple lines.

SET TIMESTAMP=%date~4,4%%date~7,2%%date~10,2%%time~11,2%%time~14,2%%time~17,2%

 @echo TIMESTAMP=%TIMESTAMP%

-> how to call and run: omnirpt -report obj_lastbackup -tab in DP?

-> How to set the flag with timestamp on the latest backed up mointpoints?

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Scheduling a backup for dynamically created VMs

I am working on backing up VMs automatically as they are provisioned. I am using Operations Orchestration and the command line to manage data protector. My problem is that, for each machine I want to back up, I need a datalist and a schedule. I can create a datalist with the omnicreatedl command, but I cannot find a command to create a new schedule.

In order to remedy this, I was going to create a text file with the secudule specifications and attempt to remotely place it in the correct folder, but manual attempts are inconsistent and I have read that it doesn't work.

Is there a way to create schedules using the command line?

Can you point multiple backups and datalists to the same schedule?

Can you consistently get Data Protector to recognize a text file it did not create?

Looked at our Data Protector and now seeing this error 'Interprocess communication problem'. It continues to perform the scheduled backups correctly. There has been no change of names.

omnidbutil -show_cell_name    gives the correct FQDN

DP v6.11 to v6.20

I know that I am several versions behind in DP and will be upgrading in the next month or so.  Here is my problem.  When I upgraded DP v6.11 to v6.20 on my HP 3440-4 server with HP-UX 11.23 my MLS5000 tape library stopped showing me what was in slot 24.  If I look at the front display of the library it shows me all 24 slots.  When I look at the library from my desk I see all 24 slots and that there are tapes in the slots.  When I do a barcode scan using DP 6.20 it will show me 24 slots in the left pane but will only scan 23 tapes which shows up in the right pane.  The 24th slot in the left pane shows a "?" but doesn't display the barcode.  I have to manually scan the slot before the tape shows up.  If I swap magazines then I have to do a tape scan on slot 24 again.

Anyone know why this happened?  Wonding if I need a patch or a firmware update.

Thanks,

Disk to Tape using object copy - 7.0

$

Hi,

Just looking for some support or advice about the Disk to Tape backups using object copy.

We currently have a D2D backup solution and have separate jobs to do monthly D2T. Sometimes they overlap causing issues due to various reasons and just doubling the workload of the servers.

Looking at using the omniobjcopy command to trigger the D2T (copy from last full complete job). I've looked at the automated features within the GUI and found some potential flaws:

Post Backup:

Run after all D2D jobs so don't think this will help to configure monthly jobs to tape.

Scheduled:

If a job is scheduled for an incremental just before the job runs I’ll have an incremental which is useless for restoring.

I would like to run a command like below to run a complete copy of all the objects in the session to tape, I’ve experimented with objects but feel they may be a better way to achieve this or missing a parameter:

Omniobjcopy.exe –session 2014/08/28-01 –sourcedevice d2d_writer0 –targetdevice d2t_tape0

Any input will be welcome.

Thanks

Sean

Difference between VSS backup and MS Exchange Integration backup

$

Hi,

what benefits do I get with MS Exchange Server 2010 Integration over Volume Shadow Copy Service?

License

VSS is part of Advanced Backup to Disk, limited by data size

MS Exchange Server 2010 Integration requires Online Backup license per server

Backup options

In both types I can select Exchnage databases to backup

In both types I can select backup type Full, Incrementa, Differential - now I realized that VSS backup offers differential backup with documentaiton says: Incremental (replicas only). If you select unsupported backup types (Copy or Differential) when scheduling the backup, Data Protector will abort the backup and display an error message

Restore options

Same?

Granular recovery

Granular recovery supports both backup types

All the other options seems to be equal. Is it worth the license fee?

Thank you for your opinions

I/O Error after Adding New Device in DP 6

$

I am running DP 6.2 on Windows 2003

Another technician just installed Windows Server 2008 Std R2 on an HP ML350 G5 which had an SDLT drive so I switched it out with an Ultrium 448 LTO-2 Drive.   Installed the drivers, finalized the server and prepared it for deployment.

I added the device in Data Protector, no issues

I scanned the tape, no issues

I attempted to format the tape, does not complete the task, takes an hour for it to say

CANNOT WRITE TO DEVICE ([1117] THE REQUEST COULD NOT BE PERFORMED BECAUSE OF AN I/O DEVICE ERROR.

Has anyone out there had the same issues?

Options for: Received ABORT request from NET => aborting

Hi,

I got this error during Exchange backup and backup was aborted. The log of VSSBAR says write (to MA?) failed. MA is located on different server and there are no log entries. Are there any options to look after to improve resiliency against network hitches?

Kind regards, Jan

EDIT: This is DP 9.0. The backup run for 2 hours and ~18 minutes without problems, it doesn't look like keepalive problem. I have found OB2IPCKEEPALIVE in old posts about similar problem but this is not documented in DP 9.0 omnirc.tmpl

HP-UX: Move DB40 from DP 6.0 to DP 7.0

I have cold installed DP 7 on an IA64 box to replace an old PARISC box running DP6.00. The cell manager is also the install server and I have a couple of tape drives in a small library.

I need the IDB from DP6 imported to the new DP7 install, but various posts have a lot of conflicting advise, from dozens of steps to copying everything in /etc/opt/omni/server and /var/opt/omni/server to simply running omnidbutil -writedb and -readdb. There are a lot of directories and files that have me worried about version incompatibilities. I don't need the old tape device info and will export/import the 5 clients by hand. Is there a simple way to migrate the data to the new server?

Incremental Oracle Database backup shows FULL backup type

i, we run RMAN backup through HP Data Protector on 11gR1 and 11gR2 database servers. Script used in backup is generated by Data Protector, and looks like following. Backup level is set to 1 for incremental backup: ------ cut here ----- run { allocate channel 'dev_0' type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=CSPRD,OB2BARLIST=PRD-DB)'; allocate channel 'dev_1' type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=CSPRD,OB2BARLIST=PRD-DB)'; allocate channel 'dev_2' type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=CSPRD,OB2BARLIST=PRD-DB)'; allocate channel 'dev_3' type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=CSPRD,OB2BARLIST=PRD-DB)'; backup incremental level format 'PRD-DB<PRD_%s:%t:%p>.dbf' database; sql 'alter system archive log current'; backup format 'PRD-DB<PRD_%s:%t:%p>.dbf' archivelog all; backup format 'PRD-DB<PRD_%s:%t:%p>.dbf' current controlfile; } ------ cut here ----- However, the backup type of most of the dbf shows "full backup", and following RMAN-08008 message is displayed in backup job log: RMAN-03090: Starting backup at 29-AUG-14 RMAN-08008: channel dev_0: starting full datafile backup set RMAN-08010: channel dev_0: specifying datafile(s) in backup set RMAN-08011: including current control file in backup set RMAN-08038: channel dev_0: starting piece 1 at 29-AUG-14 [Normal] From: OB2BAR_SBT_CHANNEL@pdb1.mydc.hk "PRD" Time: 29-Aug-14 6:02:36 AM Starting OB2BAR Backup: pdb1r.mydc.hk:PRD-DB.dbf "Oracle8" I wonder why level 1 backup gives full backup message. Would anyone please help? Sorry for the naive question. Thanks a lot. Rgds

3 questions on MSL 2024 tape library

$

Dear Sir,

I have 3 Questions.

  1. We have MSL 2024 tape library having single device currently backed up data itself in tapes, here my question is how to take my ERP Production backed up data tape outside in safe zone.
  2. About firmware updating in tape library is it necessary, what is the use and is there any impact on already backed up data in tape.
  3. If we want to change the location of servers and tape library again have to buy new licenses for dp, if not what is the procedure.

Regards

Naseer

Set variables in .omnirc file

Hello,

i´ve got a problem with one backup in my dp 9.01 environment.

The disk agent need more than 120 minutes to finish, so the backup runs into timeout.

[Normal] From: VBDA@CLIENT "BACKUP"  Time: 03.09.2014 09:46:19
STARTING Disk Agent for CLIENT "BACKUP".

[Major] From: BSM@CLIENT "CLIENT"  Time: 03.09.2014 11:46:31
[61:1002]      The VBDA named "BACKUP" on host CLIENT
reached its inactivity timeout of 7200 seconds.
The agent on host will be shutdown.

So i have to set the "SmDaIdleTimeout" variable but i dont want that in the globals file. I want it especially for this client. So i have to add this variable into the .omnirc file right?

I did that, but it doesent work.

Anything wrong with this?

Tape Drive part numbers

$

There are two tape libraries, one using Drive HP:Ultrium 5-SCSI and the other using  HP:Ultrium 4-SCSI

We need to get the part numbers of 3 TB tapes for the Ultrium-5 and 1 TB tapes for the Ultrium 4 drives.

Looking at some of the specs of the drives on the Internet:

LTO-5 Ultrium 3280
LTO-5 Ultrium 3000
LTO-4 Ultrium 1840
LTO-4 Ultrium 1760

How do I know exactly which tape drives I have and does it affect which tapes I need to purchase.
