Data Protector 6.11 and MS VSS exchange restore

$

Hi, we have a issue restoring a MS exchange 2007 VSS backup.

I successfully restored a session last week and restored user email from it. I restored to a exchange recovery storage group (RSG). I then deleted this RSG and data from the exchange server.  I now need to restore the same session again to get data for another user. When I try to do this I choose properties and "select for restore" on the version I want 30/7/2014. I then select "restore as" and choose to "restore to non exchange location and create a RSG" (same as I did last week).  I also choose a free drive letter with free space so I don't overwrite anything.

When I restore this it chooses the most recent backup, overriding the option I choose for 30/7/2014.

I can verify from the media tab before the restore starts the wrong tape is selected. before I choose the restore as option the correct tape is listed. As soon as I go to "restore as" option the tape changes.

Once you have set the "restore as" options the properties section for choosing the session becomes greyed out.

Since the last successful restore nothing much has changes except a couple of backups have run.

Any Idea?

Thanks

Mel

Filenames in IDB almost full

I get a report from DP about the IDB size report, and the Filenames seemed to be getting full. So i logged a call with HP and they gave me a procedure to run, which i started last night, and was doing the omnidbutil -purge -filenames -force  and it got to 57% and seemed to not go any further after about 20 mins, so i aborted the job. Even though i've read i should have used the omnidbutil –purge_stop but i didn't know that. So i ran the rest of the procedure and if anything its now got worse. Any advice greatly appreciated, I'm going to attach a screen shot of the report after running the procedure, and I will attach a txt file with the commands they asked me to do.

IS there a way of just extending the Filenames database for now?

Also i don't know if its related but none of my scheduled backups ran over night? I'm worried about starting jobs until the filenames as reduced. when the DB is full does it stop scheduled backups?

also this is the output people seem to ask in these questions

Trouble mirroring between tape and disk

$

We're running DP7 and I've got an LTO6 drive that we do our typical backups to, we recently added a license for the disk TB backups and I'm having trouble mirroring on both for jobs.

I can run backups to tape fine, or backups to disk fine, but when I mirror them the backup just wont start.

I have let it run for 8 hours straight and eventually just cancelled it. It fails whether I am mirroring to the disk or mirroring to the tape instead.

It never initializes the tape library or moves a tape into it since it seems to be stuck on the backup to disk side of the house.

Hi folks,

Does anyone know how to reset the poor tape flag in DP 8.10?

I've ran the command omnimm -reset_poor_medium from the command line and it says it has reset the poor flag but when you open the GUI it still shows as poor.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I was having issue with one of my backup jobs.  I deleted it and when I tried recreating it, I get an error message saying IPC cannot connect 12:3012.  So I tried deleting the client itself. Now I get a critical status saying, Connection to the remote client failed.Either the client is not accessible on the network or the inet process is not running on the remote client.

Combining different backup types into one backup specification

Hi,

how can I combine different backup types into one backup specification? I want one backup specification with Filesystem backup and IDB backup. In DP 6.20 this was possible, with DP 9.00 I cannot make it. Can I edit backup specification in Datalists manully?

In the case I am required to have one backup specification per backup type chained with post backup script, I want all sessions be on one tape. But each backup chain should be on separate tape (e.g. I backup once per day, I want each day on separate tape). In other words, how can I tell DP "do not place new sessions on this tape"? The pool allocation is per session only. Or, when backups are chained, are they considered to be one session?

Kind regards, Jan

Hi,

I have DP 9.00 with HP StoreEver MSL 2024 G3 with one LTO-4 drive connected with SCSI to Windows 2008 R2 Server. Reading LTO4 spec, the tape should be fully written (or read) in about two hours but my backups take much longer. I don't know if there is a possibility to detect tape shoe-shining or if it is just guessing by backup speed. My test sessions:

Session 1
Disk Agent 1 took 217 minutes to write 570GB data, 44 MB / s (disk should do 60 MB/s)
Disk Agent 2 took 66 minutes to write 180GB data, 46 MB /s (disk should do 100 MB/s)
Total time 217 minutes, 750GB

Session 2
Disk Agent 1 too 140 minutes to write 700GB, at 70 MB/s (disk should do 200MB/s)

Session 3 (combines sources of Session 1 and Session 2)
Omnispeed shows 123 MB/s
..running just now, waiting for result

In all cases the disk agents and media agent are on the same machine, cell is on another machine, CPU is low.

Does it indicate shoe-shining? And solution is to run more disk agents (if possible) to feed enough data to LTO?

How does HW compression change the picture? Can I see statistics of the compression ratio? E.g. I can have 800GB of data on tape, but I don't know if the tape is full or just half filled. I could have data rate of 60MB/s but as they are highly compressible, the actual tape rate could be 20MB/s or lower.

I would be grateful for any information, I did spend some time googling but found nothing to answer my questions.

Kind regards, Jan

DP v8.x IDB recovery for disaster

In versions prior to v8, the method to recover the IDB was as follows

(based on the HP White Paper found here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01142698.pdf)

1) Install DP CM on remote server

2) configure file based library on server in remote location

3) run nightly IDB backup and send to remote file library

4) The IDB job includs a post-script to restore the IDB to a directory on the remote server

5) at time of disaster shutdown remote CM, copy db40 directory, re-assign IDB ownership

6) start DP on remote server and you now have an update DP catalog

With v8.x it does not look as simple.  The omnir -idb command looks a lot more involved and remote restoration may or may not be an option.

Having the DP IDB catalog is pretty much a requirement to start restores.

Does anyone have any experiences they are willing to share in recovering the IDB to a remote site in the event of a disaster ?

Tape import slower than slow

Hi,

I am importing tape with LTO-4 drive adn DP 9.00. The media agent is on different server than CM connected by 1G network. The import seems to crawl at incredible slow speed, see bellow. The CPU, I/O, disk and memory doesn't show any high activity on both servers. Counting elapsed time and imported bytes and 800GB data on tape, it will take 4hours/160Mb*800*1000 = 83 days to import. Where can I look for possible clues? The tape was written yesterday and it took 110 minutes. I expect the same time to read/import the tape.

Kind regards, Jan

Hi!

I'm trying to install a Data Protector 7.0 client in a esxi 5.1. I downloaded the HPUX version from HP website and tried to execute the onmisetup.sh as described in the installation doc. However, it shows this error message:

Changing the protection date of a backup

$

One of our cell managers is running DP 7.0 and I want to save tapes / backups that were created on particular dates for longer than the default 8 weeks. What I started doing is to move them to a seperate media pool but then realized that moving them is not going to change the catalog and data protection dates.

What I would like to prevent is to have to rebuild the index in the case that we have to restore something. So I was thinking that if I can at least change the catalog protection date I would save a huge amount of time. At the moment none of the backup sets span more than one physical tape as half of the servers gets backed up to one drive and the other half to another drive. So I have two backup sets each on a seperate tape.

Is there a way for me to add x number of weeks to the catalog protection date and can the data protection date be updated as well.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks,

    Dirk

Email (SMTP) notifications

Hi,

in DP 9.00 I sent some email (SMTP) notifications and there are small wrinkles:

* How can I change notification subject? It seems that DP passes notification name as subject, so when I want to get notification for session end, I use SessionError event with Single Message Level set to <Any>. I will get email with subject SessionError which looks ugly. I miss SessionEng notification and a parameter for subject.

* All notifications and reports I get contain text in body (HTML for reports) but they all also include attachemnt with the same information repeated. How can I configure DP to stop sending the attachemnts. The OB2_OLDMAIL_FORMAT is not set.

Kind regards, Jan
