I am new to this Data Protector 8.1 app.  I have installed clients in a couple of servers when I learned that we have some servers running on Linux and Centos.  What client should I be installing on those boxes?

I was getting error 110:1025 when I tried it earlier.

Thanks..

Recently upgraded from 6.20 to 7.0

When installing an agent on a client, the verify Cell Manager times out.

When testing with telnet <cellManager> 5555, it takes 30 seconds to reply.

Is this something new with 7.0?

Do we have a feature in DP7.0 wherer in we can set up the backup for every 30 min or every hour ?
Is there any other alternative for that to set up hourly backup for database archive log ?

8.1 upgrade

HP Support recommended that we upgrade Data Protector from version 8.01 to 8.1 and then apply the 8.12 patch

But according to the documentation (DP8.10 Virtualization Support Matrix), ESX 4 is no longer supported in 8.1

We are running three ESX 4 servers and have no short term plan to upgrade them to ESX(i) 5

Anybody had success using DP 8.1 with ESX 4.x ?

Thanks

We are running Data Protector V7 and looking at my "Report on System Dynamics" report I am seeing two clients that are adding a large number of new files every day. I need to deteremine what folder contains these files so that I can determine if the folder needs to be backed up or not.

Is there a report that would give me the file counts for each of the folders being backed up.

Hello All,

I've got a wierd issue here with Data Protector V6.2 running on HP UX 11.23 serviceguard cluster.

We have got 2 ESL library with each having 8 LTO3 drives. I did the patch upgrade as requested by HP a couple of weeks ago and have got into multiple problems.

After applying the patch PHSS_43781 and PHSS_43780 for Data Protector, i got into a problem that Data Protector would abort any backup if it comes accross warning/minor/major errors and mark the backups as "in-progress/errors".

When raised with HP, they were able to give me a LAB FIX for the binaries which i applied and as shown above along with the patches.

"In-progress/errors" issue was fixed but ran into another wierd issue. The backup jobs are locking all the drives and doing nothing. Dirves are not getting released and the subsequent backups are in queued state.

We have configured backups(though not all)  in such a way that one of the library drive would be primary and the other library would be a mirror backup. When the job kicks in, it is able to lock all 8 drives from one library and goes to a queued state without selecting any mirror drive. The second backup spec locks the remainign 8 drives from the other library and does not release them untill I manually unlock or cancel them. Can anyone let me know if they've encountered similar issues and have resolved it. It is really frustrating to have them checked periodically and remove them manually. I would appriciate if any one could solve this mystery.

I've attached some details for ref.

v8.12 dbsm.exe hangs with 100% CPU, restore of Virtual Envrionment backup of VMWare 5.5 fails

$

Hi there,

I can do successful full backups of virtual machines using the Virtual Environment integration with latest (8.12) patches loaded. I have "changed block tracking" on in VMWare and data protector and everything appears to work as it should.

However, I cannot restore. After a 10 minute delay I get:

[Major] From: RSM@xyzback2.xyz.co.uk "" Time: 20/06/2014 11:03:07
[62:1021] Bar restore session was started but no client connected
in 600 seconds.
Aborting session!

I notice that a dbsm.exe process belonging to Data Protector goes to 100% CPU as soon as you start the restore, and stays at 100% CPU even after the session has been aborted. It's not easy to kill it - it reappears, rebooting the cell manager is the best way to get rid of it.

It does not make a difference whether you try to restore directly back to VMWare i.e. "restore to datacenter" or if you just try to restore the files locally on the cell manager i.e. "restore to directory". Same symptoms either way.

I did have the Virtual Environment integration backing up and restoring successfully - I think what may have broken it is upgrading my VCenter server from 5.5.0 to 5.5.0 update 1b (latest at the time of writing).

The cell manager is on Windows Server 2008 R2, virtualised inside VMWare. The backup device is a Quantum tape library connected to a physical machine with the data protector media agent. Data Protector still happily backs up and restores ordinary filesystems via disk agent - just the Virtual Environment integration is broken.

Does anyone have any helpful thoughts please?

Thanks,

Matt.

DP 7 File Library Repository Configuartion

Hi All.

I’ve just had a new EonNAS installed that I’ll be using for backups (finally moving away from LTO2, 4 and 5 tapes) and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on what settings to use for the file repositories?

The EonNAS is iSCSI connected and the way we are going to set it up is to create a disc pool for each server that needs backing up then present that pool as an iSCSI disk to that server.

I’m currently testing that out. I have created a File Library device, set the client to the server that has the disk presented to it and have 1 file repository pointing to a folder called "backups" on that presented disk. The disk is currently 3TB and likely to increase. Are you keeping up with me here :-)

Is that the best way or should I have multiple repositories? Also what are the best settings for these repositories?

Currently its:

Maximum size of file depot = 5GB

Minimum free disk size to create new file depot = 2MB

Amount of disk space which should stay free on disk = 0MB

Event if the free disk space drops below = 10%

I’ve run a test backup today of the system state (5.7GB and the backup created a 5GB file and 745MB file).

I know I’m asking a lot, I’m hoping that with your help it will save me a lot of time by not having to test out multiple configs.

Data Protector A6.10 and LTO 6

I have a Quantum Scaler i40 library with an Ultrium LTO 6 drive. It is connected to a Windows Server 2003 R2 with a SAS connection and if I try and backup a local drive in the server the max speed I can acheive is 8MB/s which it slower than a Windows copy/paste.

I have mad sure that the driver, library and SAS HBA are all using the latest drivers and firmware and that the drive and library are healthy. However I am unable to get a faster write time.

Can anyone suggest anything.

HP DP 7 , 8 and 8.1 Quick SPecs

Hello all,

I was able to find Quick spec file for DP 8.1 but not for the previous version.

I really need it because I am looking for all Database compatibility (like Oracle 8..) and same for SAP (SAP R/3 4.6C  and SAP ECC6)

Regarding SAP ECC 6 or SAP R/3 4.6C  i found nothing in the Software guide except
SAP R/3 limitations
l
If ZDB to tape is used to back up a tablespace in a ZDB environment on Windows systems, and the ZDB_ORA_INCLUDE_CF_OLFomnirc option is not set to 1, the backup will fail if the control file is not on the mirrored disk or in the snapshot that will be backed up
SO i guess SAP R/3 4.6C  is supported by DP 8.1 and so 8.0 and also 7. But what about ECC 6 ?

Regarding the Disk agent client  according to the documentation, for some  Disk agnt requires SP 2 on server 2003 and in other doc only some KB.

Could you enlight me on this please ?

Thank you very much

LTO-5 256k Block size on W2008 R2 SP1 x64 Storage Server not working?

$

I have a DP8.12 Cell Manager on Windows 2008 R2 x64 with both D2D4324 and MSL8096 Tape library. All tape drives (LTO-5) fibre connected are set to 256k block size.

All works well until I tried to add an HP X3800 Nas server (DL380 G7) running Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Storage Server x64, with Brocade 815 FC hba as a Media Server - On testing with a simple Format, DP reports [90:52] Cannot read from device ([87] The parameter is incorrect.

On further testing locally on the X3800 with LTT using Dev Performance, the test works with 128k blocks, but fails immediately with 256k blocks reporting 'Invalid Block size'. Both block sizes pass on a similar test on the Cell Manager.

I have updated the Brocade Storport driver to the latest version (3.2.1.0), and the hbas to latest firmware (2013 08 01), and am using the latest HP StoreEver Tape Drivers (3.9.0.0)

The X3800 is a x64 machine, so MaximumSGList is apparently not valid, (but I have added it anyway)

Backup from the X3800 to a (loacl) null device works okay

What am I missing on this DL380 G7 under Windows 2008 R2 x64 Storage Server, with Brocade 815 hba's that prevents the use of 256k blocks to an LTO-5?

Any suggestions - I'm at a loss....
