Slow filesystem backups

Hello,

Filesystem backup performance is driving me crazy! Hope anyone can help? Your feedback is much appreciated!

 

Issue:

Backup of the servers mentioned below is taking ages. When I am lucky, this is all backed up within 48 hours. It's not possible to re-run a backup during weekdays. Storage performance is more than sufficient. We have not too many performance demanding applications running. To my surpise, a regula Windows file copy job is faster then a Data Protector driven backup. It's large file systems containing houndredhousends of files. This won't guarantee best performance, of course, but how can I ensure that backup is running as fast as possible? I am running ~4 disk agents per 2 TB LUN already and utilized TreeSizeFree to measure sizes in order to assign Disk Agents accordingly.

Below a detailed describtion of the environment:

 

Environment:

--- Veeam server (7.0 TB) Few large files

 

All virtual machines on different blade servers. VMs have 1 Gbit/s NICs. Each blade server has 2 Gbit/s uplink to 2 ethernet switches and each switch has 4 Gibt/s uplink to the core switches HP Data Protector is connected to.
Data resides on HP 3par / IBM XIV storage using 4 Gbit/s fibre channel connectivity per blade. Blade center has 2 or 3x8 Gbit/s fibre channel connectivity to SANs.

 

-- Backup system
--- Server 1 (Cell Server)
--- Server 2 (Media Agent)
---- MSL 4048 (2x 4 Gbit/s FC, 2x LTO5)

 

Both servers have 4x 1 Gbit/s running in eitherchannel, connected to core switches. Server running media agent has 2x 4 Gbit/s fibre Channel connectivity to fabric fibre channel switches (Server 1 <-> MSL 4048 using 2x LTO5).

DP 8.1 disabled devices

Hello again,

 

at the moment we have the problem, that devices in DP 8.1 will automatically disable, when (I think 2) sessions fail on one device.  This is not very useable for us right now, so is there any chance to disable that function?

Cant find anything on the internet.

SharePoint Foundation 2010 on Windows Server 2012. Can I backup with HP Data Protector v8.1?

My Setup:

2 x WFE Servers running SharePoint Foundation 2010 SP2 installed on Windows Server 2012.

1 x SQL Server running SQL Server 2008 R2. Please note this SQL server is shared and is not dedicated for SharePoint DBs

I decided to install SPF2010 SP2 on a Windows Server 2012 server as this is now officially supported by Microsoft:

I am looking to backup/restore my farm using the following backup solutions on the basis that the SQL server I am using is not dedicated to Shareoint, which I think rules out the VSS options:

- Data Protector Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007/2010/2013 integration

- Data Protector Granular Recovery Extension for Microsoft SharePoint Server

I have installed HP Data Protector v8.1 and installed the following components on the WFE and SQL server:

WFE:

Disk Agent (A.08.10)

User Interface (A.08.10)

MS SharePoint Server 2007/2010/2013 Integration (A.08.10)

MS SharePoint Granular Recovery Extension (A.08.10)

SQL:

Disk Agent (A.08.10)

User Interface (A.08.10)

MS SQL Integration (A.08.10)

I currently have 2 issues, one with the installation of MS SharePoint GRE and the other is regarding the backup of the Farm.

GRE:

When I try and install the SharePoint GRE Extension, I receive the following error:

[Critical] <pospf01.nbs.int>   Post-installation script for the MS SharePoint Granular Recovery Extension failed with the output:

Unhandled Exception: System.OverflowException: Value was either too large or too small for an Int32.    at System.Convert.ToInt32(UInt32 value)    at SPUtil.Program.Main(String[] args) Install/upgrade failed, for more details check 'shp_gre_setup.txt' log

SharePoint Backup:

When I attempt to backup the farm, I receive the following error:

[Warning] From: OB2BAR_SHAREPOINT@pospf01.nbs.int "SPF_Configuration"  Time: 03/06/2014 11:23:36  SharePoint 2007 without SP2 is not supported. Check if SP2 is installed.

[Normal] From: BSM@lab-hpdp-spf.nbs.int "SPF_Backup"  Time: 03/06/2014 11:23:38  OB2BAR application on "pospf01.nbs.int" disconnected.

[Critical] From: BSM@lab-hpdp-spf.nbs.int "SPF_Backup"  Time: 03/06/2014 11:23:38  None of the Disk Agents completed successfully.  Session has failed.

 

I am not sure why I am receiving a warning advising me to check if SP2 is installed for SharePoint 2007, when I have SharePoint 2010 installed.

I would like to know if HP Data Protector v8.1 is known to be able to backup a SharePoint Foundation 2010 Farm running on Windows Server 2012 and if this isn't supported or known to work, when/if HP are planning on adding support for this setup?

I can confirm that the account I am using for the impersonation on the WFE and within the config of GRE has Local admin rights on the WFE, DBO rights on the databases and Farm Admin rights.

DataProtector 7.0 setup question

We just moved to version 7 running on a Windows 2008 server and have two tape drives that are each connected to a server. Each server is setup as a media agent.

 

Currently we have two backups scheduled to run daily and each backup contains development, test and production servers. What I would like to do is to seperate the clients out into three groups so that I can run my production backup first.

 

Does anybody have any suggestions on how this could be done. We are planning on upgrading to version 8 soon if that help.

eject media admin guide example script not working

Hi, sorry if thi is old question but i searched acould nt find

I have setup the eject media after x hours as per admin guide examole

i.e.

create reportgorup that lists media used to bat file and email

create endof sesion event to evoke report group

copied andpasted script

 

email is receviced with correct list of media used attached

perlscript execute but says "no media found to eject after x hours"

it ooks as if the parameters are not being passsed to the perl script

the bat filecontains the one line ...

perl.exe "omnirpt_eject.pl"

with no vairable handling

so i  am presuming the perl script picks up the parameters (library and slot) by a different method

(my perlskills are no existent)

all files reside in bin directory

 

please hep! am I missing something

my OS is windows 2008 r2

dp version 8.0

 

is there a permissions execution problem? or do i have to modify the copy and pasted script?

I am new to HP DP.. Got a backup failure, below are the messages..

HP Data Protector 6.21 - No new events in DP event viewer

Hi All, 

 

Since installing some DP patches on my Windows 2008 R2 Cell manager i have noticed that my backup monitoring has stopped working. 

 

I have also noticed that general events that data protector used to record are no longer being recorded despite the notifications being set up and created for them. 

 

I have receated the DP event log files and restarted the DP services in an attempt to solve the issue but still no events...

 

Any help would be appericated.

Backup & Restore Very slow from EMC LUNs ON HP-UX Client

Hello,

 

DP CM = 7.00 with all latest patches 7.03

CM Platforms = WIndows 2008 R2, ProLiant DL360 G7

Physical Memory = 4GB

 

Client1 = HP-UX 11.31 with all latest patches of 7.03 ( Total 3 server same model)

Client serevr = BL860c

 

Client2 = HP-UX 11.31 with all latest patches of 7.03

Client server = BL860c i2

 

Tape Library= "HP:1x8 G2 AUTOLDR_mpfbackup

Device = HP:Ultrium 4-SCSI_1_mpfbackup

 

All the HP-UX server are having LUNs from EMC storage new in the enviornemnt. Database is migrated to EMC storage from earlier of HP LEFT HAND ISCSI Storage.

 

All the4 HP-UX servers are connected through SAN switch to EMC storage.

 

Now the issues is I am getting here the backup on three BL860c servers as very slow; backup speed of 13MB/S and restore speed of 6MB/S

 

where as the backup speed on BL860c i2 server is 40MB/S and Restore speed also is 40MB/S.

 

Earleir when we were using the left hand storage the speed was almost same as it is currently now in BL860c i2, but after migrating to EMC there is a very huge performance issues on all 3 servers where as 4th server having different model is perfect.

 

I checked from the fc HBA, updated the fc HBA driver and firmware, firmware of Tape library. Tested with a null backup of BL860c server it is giving 23MB/S where as BL860c i2 is giving 40MB/S but there is no difference in configuration between these servers except hardware model.

 

 

Any help where to look into this to resolve the issues. It's impacting our backup windows alot and increase the time almost double than earlier.

Hi,

My company using DP cell manager on windows 2003 and backup via MSL2024 SCSI.

 

Now i have a new autoloader 1/8 G2 LTO6 FC to replace MSL2024.

 

Autoloader & DP Cell manager connect to SAN switch on EVA4400.

 

On DP cell manager i run autoconfigure to recognize autoloder but not found.

 

Pls help me to add autoloader fc to Data protector.

Virtual machine setup for cell manager

We have just installed Data Protector on a Windows 2008 virtual server. Are there any guidlines on what the optimal resources are for the CM. We have our backups configured for 4 concurrent clients. I have the vm currently configured with 2 sockets and 4 cores per socket and 4GB of memory.

 

What I am seeing when I look at the CPU usage on the CM server is that it stays around 12% and memory is at 1.5GB while the backup is running. When I look at the status window the total data value is very slow to change. Not sure if I have a bottleneck somewhere in the system or not.

 

Any ideas on what a good setup should be.

Import of tapes from old cell manager

We were having some issues with our cell manager version 6.2 and this got to the point where we did a clean install of version 7 but now I have some tape drives with tapes that were created under the old version. I tried doing a scan to see if I could get the tape information into the new database but after about 7 hours it was still running and I had to cancel it so that the regular backups could start running.

 

All the clients are now on the new version and it would be nice if I could get the session information that is on the old tapes into the new version.

 

Is there a procedure to get that information over and put those tapes in the correct pool.

Normal backup speed for LTO-6 drive

Hello!

I have a problem - DP 8.12 with MSL 6480 (6250 LTO 6 Drives) running low backup speed - about 120 mb/s.

This speed was for large pst files.  

current config is: block size 1024; concurrency 20; segment size 10000;  disk buffers 32;

 

I want to figure out what is actual backup speed for this config. What can i tune to improve performance?

Error Granular DP 8,12.

Hi Folks, 

 

I have this error when try to restore one mailbox with Granular:

We try with diferents DB and the same error, this error was the same with DP 8,01, we did update and sema error

Hi all,

 

getting the following when attempting to run a data protector 6.20 filesystem backup on my two virtual exchange server system reserved partitions:

70:1] Protocol error: cannot parse options => aborting

 

 

This is par of a larger filesytem incremental (once weekly full) job with several servers in the job.

 

I can run a new job just on the individual drives and it runs fine, but if I do a 'restart failed objects' on the main job, these two sys reserved volumes continue to fail.

 

Anyone come across anything like this?

6.20 Upgrade Questions

Reading the 7.0 Install & Licensing guide, it sounds like all you have to do to upgrade is run the omnisetup.sh script from the install depot.  Is it really that simple?

 

Secondly, I've heard that DP 8.x is "not ready for prime time" and the recommendation from this very knowledgeable source was to go with 7.03 until 8.x is ready.  Has anyone else heard similar rumors?

We need to start dp tape backup as soon as file arrives at a particualr location.

DP Cell manager win 2008 R2 Standard . 

DP client hpux 11.31
