DP 8.1, HP P4000 and VSS Transportable backup (ZDB)

$

Hi All,

I have a VMWare VM (Windows 2012) which was configured with a Raw Datastore Mapped virtual disk which is a P4000 storage system volume. I wanted to configure ZDB (Zero Downtime Backup), so that I can create a snapshot of this volume, mount it on the backup server (Windows 2012, Cell Manager with Media Agent) and copy it on tape.

Unfortunately the documentation does not provide any specific details on how this needs to be configured, but I managed to get the snapshot created on P4000 system during backup, however DP is unable to mount it on the backup system.

The backup system has iSCSI connection to the P4000 system and "sees" the original volume from the application server (in "Offline" mode), but the snapshot when created does not have any servers assigned, and thus will not be able to be mounted.

I also see this error message in the event log from HP LeftHand VSS Provider:

"Failed to connect snapshot LUN , 0x80001012 - Invalid parameter Transport. (Transport)."

It looks like the VSS provider is asked to mount the snapshot on the backup system, but has some kind of wrong parameter requested and fails.

Has anyone seen this before?

Backup of W2012 deduplicated volume

Hello,

we are using DP 7.01 on HP-UX and trying to backup our first W2012 server with a dedup volume (d: drive). During night a software dumps large amounts of data on this 5 TB volume which gets deduplicated during the day. In the evening a dedup rate of 90% is reached and only 1 TB is really used. The amount of deduped data is 20 TB.

Our first backup showed that DP is backing up  the whole 20 TB and not the dedupicated 1 TB. Is this this the way it works or should DP know about the dedup volume and backup only the dedup data + metadata?

What about restores? If DP is trying to restore the native 20 TB on the 5 TB volume a restore of the whole volume would certainly fail because W2012 dedup is not inline.

Any ideas? Do we have to upgrade or change the config to make this work?

Data Protection for a backup job is set as 2 weeks.
However last week's data protection under Internal database in HP DP shows as 1 week 18 hrs.
Is it reducing the period  or something under 2 weeks.

I am running 6.2 on a Windows 2003 server

Server I am pushing the client to is also Windows 2003 Server

I can ping both ways

nslookup and DNS are all resolving

but...............

I still receive this error when trying to install the client:

[Normal] Connecting to client [server name]...

[Normal] Valid username and password must be specified...

[Normal] Connecting to client [server name]...

[Critical] [110:1027] Error connecting to client:

[Normal] Installation session finished on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, 2:35:04 PM.

I even reset the local administrator password to make sure the credentials were correct.  I have used the domain admin user and password but no luck there either.

I was able to push the client to 2 other servers in the same domain with no issue but this one had failed on me.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

DP 8.11 SAN BACKUP

I have renewed the data protector version to 8.11 and I changed the old two LTO for new FC LTO6.

Because my English is not very fluent I attached a diagram with my environment.

I have a P2000 connected to two Proliant servers forming a cluster of Windows and file services discharged.

I configured the zoning between (A1:A2) and (B1:B2), the data protector see properly two drives and robotics.

When I setup the backup job, I select the Virtual file server, and select some folders.

When the job starts, I see that the network of one node of cluster and the DP server is about 300MB/s, I assume the backup is not being performed by the SAN.

Should we change something in the zoning configuration or data protector to make the backup through SAN?

Thank you very much

D2D library confused. Drives "not ready" and media "Data Protector Foreign medium"

$

I have no idea what the heck happened but I have a D2D4106 library that I'm using with Data Protector 8.1 which has been working fine until a couple of days ago when everything seems to have gotten messed up to the point that I can't use any of the media or drives.   It's so confused that I'm not even sure how to describe the problem or where to start.

I have 8 virtual drives (LT05) set up on the D2D and I have 128 cartridges (slots).  It all started when I saw that there was a mount request because there was no more media in the required pool.  I tried to format some more "tapes" but the jobs pending had the tape drives busy so I aborted those backup jobs.  When I tried to use a drive to format new media the job would hang and I'd get an error that "device unit not ready" (assuming the tape drive).  None of the 8 drives appear to be working.  3 of the 8 drives show up as yellow icons, the other 5 are gray.  Those that are yellow apparently need to have their serial number rediscovered (as if the "drive" was replaced).  Finally, about half of the slots have bar coded virtual tapes that say "Data Protector Foreign media".  If I try to import the tape that Data Protector sees as foreign I run into the issue of "device unit not ready" for any tape drive I try to use.  At this point I'm thinking I'm going to have to blow the whole thing away and start from scratch.  Luckily this is a server that I'm testing but there are a couple of backups on it that are fairly important.

Here's the error I'm seeing on one of the drives when I try to import the foreign media:

DP 6 - Win 2008 and VSS query

$

Hi,

We had a Windows 2003 server with SQL Server 2005 installed that was backed up using a DP 6 file system backup.  The SQL Server was backed up seperately.

This server was then virtualised and the O/S was upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2 Std.

Now, when the backup runs, in the SQL Server log there are the following messages:

I/O is frozen on database msdb.  No user action is required.  However if I/O is not resumed promptly, you could cancel the backup.

I/O was resumed on database msdb.  No user action is required.

Database backed up: msdb ....

This is reported for all the databases.

The backup is just a filesystem backup with the SQL Server datafiles excluded, so no database backups should be performed.

I had read that these SQL error messages could be related to VSS, but "Use Shadow Copy" is not specified in the backup.

I have done two things to try to identify if it is VSS,

1.  Enable "Use Shadow Copy" for the backup and save it.  Checking the file for the backup I could see -vss specified.  I then disabled "Use Shadow Copy" and saved it.  This time checking the file for the backup I could see -no_vss specified.

The only problem with this was that when the backup ran, it didn't like the option -no_vss, even though it was put there by the application.

2.  I disabled the SQL Server VSS Writer service on the server.

This time there were no I/O messages reported by SQL Server.

As far as I can see, the only thing that changed was the O/S from 2003 to 2008.  I know this is an old version of DP, and am wondering if 2008 R2 was not supported.

Any ideas,

Thanks

"Re-hydrate" B2D Device

$

All,

DP 8.01 running on Win2k8 R2.

We had a B2D device on an MSA60, RAID5, Drive G:

We had a catastropic failure of multiple drives (almost simultaneously).

While the store was unavailable, I stopped the StoreOnce serivce on that server (the CM).

We were able to get it back online and copy the contents of the volume to a new volume (Z:).

At that time, we decided that we couldn't be guaranteed that any of the information was useful to DP, so removed the B2D device within DP and were going to start from scratch.

While in the middle of doing that, we had catastrophic failures of drives on a different volume.  But, the data stored there was being backed up to, you guessed it, the B2D volume we just erased from within DP.

So, now we need to "re-attach" or "re-hydrate the IDB" or in some way scan the new location and "import" it back into DP.

HP has already had us rename the volume to G:, re-add the StoreOnce device (with same settings) back into DP, but it still cannot see what's stored there.

We've been on and off the phone with HP support for the last 20 hours, and nobody seems to be able to tells us a) if it's possible, or b) how to do it..  From what I've seen, they've never even attempted to "import" anything (or something along those lines).

Does anyone have any light to shed on accomplishing this?  I currently have an open case with HP (still) to try to get this figured out, but if I can get a resolution to it prior to them calling back, that would be great.

Kindest regards,

Brian

Cell import in wrong cell

$

Hello,

actually we migrate our DP 7.3 (Windows) environment to out new DP 8.11 (Linux) environemnt.

The new setup has 1 Network-Interface/IP-Adress with to DNS-Names.

Also for example, the server got the ip 123.123.123.123 and listen to server.test.com and cell.test.com.

So when we now import windows clients, the client get not importet to cell.test.com,  but in server.test.com.

So the function is given too with that, but if we now want to upgrade the clients with an installation-server, we get this messages:

[Critical]  [110:117] The system client1.test.com is already in another cell: server.test.com.

So we could change it in the regedit, but we´ve got plenty windows servers and this is not really fun.

I´ve got already lookup if it´s possible to set the cell-managers-name in the omnicc command, but that is not possible.

Are we doing something wrong? And how do we change it?

Thanks a lot!

The event logs on the server also display the same errors some VDI Errors on the SQL Server.

I found this article which refers to another version of SQL, but it mention the same problem:

But we have SQL 2008.

The Database is 40GB in size, the db is mounted, online. another Dbs in the same Server are backing up fine.

Any Ideas?

Is there a way to get ahold of the dp windows agent 8.1 and do a deployment on machines during an MDT deployment?  So far I've only done deployments via the console and wasn't sure if there was an msi that should be on the server that I could use or if it would be a separate download.

DP Virtual Integration (VEPA) experiences v7.x and v8.x

Looking to hear others experiences with Data Protector and its virtual integration (VEPA), specifically with VMWare.

After using DP for 3+ years (spanning v6.11,v7.01,v8.11) we are re-evaluating our backup solution.  Do we stay with DP or move on to some other solution (currently evaluating Avamar). ?

Our experiences with VEPA integration has been spotty and frustrating.  VEPA sessions constantly leave a mess of snapshots behind,  and in our environment using virtualized VEPA servers, leave the hot-add disks behind as well.. This leaves us with a mess to manually cleanup every moring and a waste of valuable time.

Random failures of VEPA backups have also caused issue with our annual disaster testing over the years where we thought backups were good only to find out that there were unregistered failures in our differential+full stream causing us to revert to previous/other weeks in order to DR testing. (good luck finding completely successfull jobs)

Implemented  v8.x in the past 90 days, hoping to find some stability.  Alas, there is little.  The only bright spot is that after cleanup, jobs can be restarted. (which I believe is now available in the latest version of 7.x ).

Support calls have been opened with HP but no solution other than to continue to apply patches as they come out (8.11 is current).  The latest non-solution...  In January 2014 timeframe DP v8.1 supported vCenter 5.1.x, issues started arising and now the March support matrix states vCenter 5.1.2 is the minimum.  No troubleshooting from HP now til we update our vCenter. argggg.

v8.1 to me is a step backwards from 7.x.

Appreciate anyone sharing their VEPA experiences while we evaluate other products or decide to stay with DP.

Thank you all in advance !!

8.1 install can't connect to clients

I'm setting up a new installation of DataProtector and I'm having some trouble with the user accounts and client systems.

I've tried using the Install Server to set up clients but I keep getting umable to connect errors. Is there a port that needs to be opened, or a feature that needs to be enabled for this to work?

I've also tried manually installing the client, but when I try to connect to the server I get an insufficient permissions error when using the server's local admin account.

I was told that it can be easier to istall clients if the server is bound to the active directory domain, but when I try to log into the manager after binding it, I get an insufficient permissions error with local and domain admin accounts (even though the wildcard user is enabled in the admin group).

I'm really at a loss here for getting these clients connected, and would apreciate any help.
