I was just looking around for what makes DP 8 so special when compared to other enterprise backup softwares in the market ?
I can see that, in terms of scalability DP 8 has improved a lot; meanwhile, it has lots of bugs (GUI issues, IDB issues).
Would any one care to share thier knowledge on "DP 8's new features that upholds it when compared to to other backup products in the market" ?

Actually I've a little problem. My backup is very slow.
I need to know which machines are slow.
I don't know the commande line.
For the moment I use this
omnirpt -report single_session -session -html <sessionid> > file.html
But I need a table, with each machines. Like this machine1 time 1 hour data written 15 go.
If you can help it will be great.

I have an exchange backup that has started to hang when the backup has completed. I have to abort the session and the the "Backup Statistics" then appear. The backup completes with all green ticks. I have added the following variables to the omnirc file on both the exchange servers in the cluster (Windows 2012) and restarted the services. The problem still persists. Any help would be great.
Cell Manager and clients are DP7.01 + latest patches.

We have observed the omnisetup.sh script of Data Protector searches for socket number 5555 usage as part of pre-requisite check but uses a wrong grep command which fetches incorrect socket numbers containing 5555 in the numbers such as 15555, 25555, 55552 and etc... and thinks that the port 5555 is in use and fails to install. Please let me know how to submit a request for a bug fix.

we've had the below errors over the weekend on a vm backup. v 6.21 cell manager and client both server 2008. I've never had a problem with this servers vm backup before. I've done some searching and came across the following link in which there is a suggestion it's a san problem:

The thing is that after checking the errors (server had crashed due to lun space filling up) a stuck delta file (snapshot) was reported attached to the server which had 'choked' the lun and caused the crash, and that the data protector vm backup snapshot caused the problem. I'm not so sure and am wondering could it have been a more general san issue?

We backup a large amount of virtual servers (>300), over LAN.
This in one DP 7.03 cell; one Cell Manager and two media servers, all running Windows 2008R2.
Backups are written to VLS’s and later on copied to LTO tape.
For ease of management we created backup specs. based on client function, packing together many servers in one spec. E.g. production servers packed together, development server packed together, etc.
This way, we created a few backup specs. with some of them backing up between 50 and 100 cliënts.
Backing up to a VLS, and later on copy that to LTO, proofed fastest when using lowest drive concurrency (=1) and use as many drives possible in parallel (some up to 30)
Even more, some of these large backup specs. run concurrently.
All this leads to the fact that, at one time, a media server can be driving some 60 VLS tape drives.
This is where problems with one of the backup specs. began to arise.
A backup spec. started to fail with some client mountpoints hanging forever or mountpoints running into the default 8400 seconds timeout.
Usually these things end up searching for a needle in a haystack.
But just for once, Data Protector gave us some reference to what was going on.
In de DP debug.log on the media server concerning, an application exception message error code could be found, occurring exactly 8400 seconds before the first timeout message arose in the session log. The exception message error code is 0xc0000142.
Googling this error code showed us a Microsoft Knowledge Base article #KB824422.
This article talks about servers running into troubles when running many processes concurrently. Although this article is giving reference to Windows NT, it still applies to W2008R2!
Consider a Windows 2008R2 media server driving 60 VLS drives in parallel. That is 60 BMA.EXE processes. But, it will also be running 60 UMA.EXE processes then. Above that, you will also see 60 CONHOST.EXE processes running. That is some 180 processes, next to all the other Windows processes running.
Seemed legit to think that this cloud be the culprit for the backup.
And indeed, after having followed the advice given in the Microsoft article, the backup spec. gave us no more trouble. We raised the mentioned non-interactive value from 768 to 1024 which proofed enough to be in our case. Maybe, in time, we will have to raise that again.
The compatibility matrix for the Dell PV-124T does not show that it is compatible with Data Protector. However, I have seen some posts where it appears this library is being used with Data Protector. Is anybody using this library with Data Protector 6.2 or 8?

when I want to restore a single file i select the server that holds that file and then i klick on the "+" in order to expand the first folder level from the disk and now a strange behavior occures: I have to wait a couple of minutes and then I get the following error:
The control is only able to display 64000 of 119617 read objects. Some will not be visible!
This message reappears 7-8 time. I then get the whole tree structure opened, no only the first subfolder list. Why Data Protector 8.1 is trying to open the whole folder structure from a disk? The DP version 7.X handled it differently. Or is there some parameter or setting I missed?

Hi colleagues,
I've intalled a new MoM v8 and I'm trying to import a CM v8 also. I've created an AD user and added it to the Admin local group on both servers (MoM and CM) and also to the Admin user group of DP, but still have the no permissions message when I try to navigate the imported CM.
Am I missing some step??

I have problem with HP DP 8.1 Linux license installation.
After i installed cell manager and gui i wanted to import license.
When i imported my lcienses (IP on license and target is ok, as i checked webware hp com) system is showing error
in column category Cell manager for windows/linux
in column Remark: License expired
In column Annotation: Feature license version is invalid.
License of ccourse isn`t expired so the problem is in something else.
On Webware i see the name of license as:
Product: B6961CAE^8.00; Version:8.00; US English; License entitlement
Is it possible that i`m not entitled to install version 8.1 ?
How can i debug this problem ?
My license was bought i think, before DP 8.1(4 month from now) was released but it was generated for version 8.0.
I didn`t check if it works on 8.0 version of DP yet.

i have just implemented DP 8.1 on 2008R2 CM (VM) it has 2 CPU and 20GB RAM..
The cell manage is Not a media agent in the cell, there are a number of dedicated backup hosts
I am runnning th GUI on the cell manager itself.
i have schedued a number of backups scheduled to run over the weekend , but the whole cell seems to have hung, i cannot get a response from omnistat, and the Gui will not load. I have checked the target devices and nothing is being written to them , although there are a number of BSM processes running on the Cell manager.
This has cell has only been in operation for 4 days.... and i would not expect with the new IDB to have an issue....
CPu is at 2-3% and RAM is running at 19%
any help would be appreciated
any ideas on if it is safe to restart the services?

So little situation sketch:
freshly installed DP 8.1 in windows 2008. The customer wants to back up to 4TB of local diskspace. So I created a test FileLibrary pointed to that drive. Running an random backup preview from most servers works fine, servers not in the DMZ.
Now there is a server in the DMZ and I thought I'd use the options in the omnirc file. So I copied the omnirc.tmpl from the programData path to the Program File\OmniBack\ folder and un commented the OB2PORTRANGE option.
So now it reads OB2PORTRANGE=18000-18009
I restarted the services and tried a backup.
And after hours of fiddling and whatnot the result remains that I get something along the lines of 'Cannot connect to Media Agent on system <cell manager>, port <random> (IPC Invalid Hostname or IP address) => Aborting.
I thought it might be in their firewall, but as far as I understand it that random port should now always be in between 18000 and 18009, which it isn't. In general it's a random number over 55k
Is there some obvious step that I am missing here? If so, please help :)

I had DP 6.0 rolled out. Upgraded the server to 7.0. A few months pass and now I have to get the clinets up to 7.x as well.
I tried upgrade-that failed. I tried removing and readding the clinet but it fails faster than I can put in a userid/password.
Yes, I can ssh to/from cell server to client. The hostname comes back as the FQN vis nslookup both from the server and the client.
I'd like docs or something to help me get this rolling. My Cell Manager is HP-UX 11.31. Clients are mostly all HP-UX as well. The IBM client systems installed no problem (go figure).

I am using DP6.21 with cell manager on windows 2003 R2. I am taking NDMP backup of my EMC Celera using it as file server.
My backup and restoring was working fine till last week but from past 2 days I am getting error while trying to restore NDMP backup. Backup is completing successfully. when I try to restore first it shows media as blue with question mark, then I try to import media and getting error in that as :
Import failed with possible cause: thsi media already has valid copy in DB If I try to export I get error Please select only data protector media.
please help I need to restore one very import file from my last week backup.

DB2 Archived_Logs_Backup - Used for backing up only archived logs. This type of backup specification can be saved, but not started or scheduled. It is used every time the User Exit program starts the backup of archived logs.
Question is:
How to temporarily disable DB2 - Archived log backup, without Shutting down Cell Manager?
Let's say, for example, because of: "omnidbutil -purge -filenames -force"
which Requires exclusive access to the IDB.
