(DP) Support Tip: Using the Microsoft Change Log Provider (Journal)

Determining how to configure the Microsoft Change Log Journal size can be confusing.

The default CLP size is 512MB, which holds about 400,000 file changes.

The change journal can be tuned if you know how many files are likely to change between backups.

The following URL explains the procedure in a simple way and includes a table of possible CLP sizes and how many file changes they would cover:

   http://faq.attix5.com/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=24

This article references the Microsoft utility "fsutil" to manipulte the CLP.  Data Protector includes a utility (omnicjutil)
that will accomplish the same functions as fsutil from a CLP prespective.  Specifics regarding omnicjutil can be found in the Data Protector user documentation, and the utility has a usage feature.

Usage synopsis:
omnicjutil -help
omnicjutil -version
omnicjutil -file file
omnicjutil -host host -volume vol [ -start [ -maxsize max -delta del ] | -stop [-wait] | -query ]

Query regarding Full backup & Inc backup

Hi,

I was told to take the Incremental backup of two of the server which was configured in DP but couldnt find any backup session in IDB nor I could find those server in any of my backup spec, so still I created new backup spec for those two server and tried incremental backup which showed warning as:-

Could not find related full backup of the object
abc named "abc".
Backup mode is changed to full

which was taking to much time so we aborted after which we triggered incremental backup and got completed within half-hour.

CM OS--Windows 2012

DP Version-- 9.05

Note: Full backup we triggered was on VTL

after aborting backup we triggered incremental backup on MSL tape library..

Does this make any effect? also please help me out with these issue...

Thank you in Advance..

Data protector 9.07 VEPA integration

Hi,

I've recently installed data protector 9.07 {included recent released patches] and setup backup host[Vepa agent] on 2 physical servers with Store CoFC.

I've seen strange data flow behaviour between [Datastore =<=FC>=>IP=> Storeonce CoFC, might due to configuration error by me :P.

I've installed 2 backup host {physical servers] with VEPA agents and also configured both backup hosts GATEWAY [FC] in Cell manager GUI.

configuration:

2 physical backup hosts {BKHost-A, BKHost-B configured with VEPA {+ configured as FC GATEWAY {CoFC} - in GUI }

+ datastore lun's are presented to both BK hosts.

my question is:

Can i have more than 1 VEPA agents in my environment ? if yes - how i can use them ? by adding gateway or by adding some configuration?

I have 2 situations:

situation 1 :  Vepa agents are installed on both BkHosts {A,B}. Configured in Cell manager gui as FC gateway with StoreOnce CoFC. in this scanerio , i start to backup VM and backup is succesful and transfer through FC gateway {BkHost-B} to StoreOnce CoFC. no traffic seen on ethernet ports.  - OK

It seems backup was done through BKHost-B FC gateway to COFC

Situation 2: i removed BKHosts-B FC gateway and run the same backup job. backup job started but i've seen the traffic flow on Ethernet ports from BKHosts-B {Send} to BKHost-A {Recv.}

Question is here , why traffic is flowing between BKHosts on Ethernet ports {10G} ? as per vepa agent configuration, it should select FC path to CoFC {Catalyst store}

one more question : I've also noticed that in SAN mode Backup Speed ....... 97.95 MB/s - It seems some issue with FC configuration or any other reason to have less bandwidth ? or just it is standard

Please have a look on below logs {situation-2}

There are cases where you would like to set an omnirc variable to a remote host.

This can be achived by using: util_cmd -setomnirc <hostname> <variable> <value>

For example:

C:\Users\Administrator.DPLAB>util_cmd -setomnirc mail1.dplab.local OB2IPCKEEPALIVE 1
*RETVAL*0

C:\Users\Administrator.DPLAB>util_cmd -getomnirc mail1.dplab.local OB2IPCKEEPALIVE

(DP) Support Tip: Cell_info file manipulation is not supported.

For example adding blank lines as separators for hosts may lead to file corruption and the file cannot be parsed anymore. Which result in clients not being available:

[Major] From: BSM@myserver "mybackup" Time: 10/06/2016 13:00:00
[61:2021] Host myclient is not in this cell.
Object will not be backed up.

In general, clients need to be added to cell_info using the Data Protector Graphical User Interface to ensure there are no corruptions in the file.

Facing problem while importing Linux IS to windows CM.

Hi all...

I have installed the HP DP 9.04 locally on a linux client (Centos 6.5).
Installation has completed successfully but was unable to import the client to CM.
Client is reachable from Cell Manager but telnet doesn't work on the port 5555.
From Client end, I am able to telnet the Cell manager on port 5555.

There is no firewall setup on the machine and both server are in the same subnet.

Work around done till now:-

1. I have added the host entries in Cell Manager and Linux Machine(Path : /etc/hosts).
2. Restarted xinetd daemon and checked.
3. Added a file cell_server with Cell Manager Name in it inside the directory /etc/opt/omni/client & /etc/opt/omni/IS.
4. Activated the omnirc parameters “OB2PORTRANGE=62000-63000 OB2INETTIMEOUT=10” to keep the connection active.

Telnet Result from Linux Client to Cell Manager :-

[root@ client]# telnet uscarbku**.***.***. 5555
Trying 10.3.10.41...
Connected to uscarbku**.***.***.
Escape character is '^]'.
HP Data Protector A.09.00: INET, internal build 104, built on Thursday, July 30, 2015, 2:28 PM

Port 5555 is listening to the port from Linux Installation Server :-

Telnet & Import Host Results from the Cell Manager :-
C:\Windows\system32>telnet 10.3.10.** 5555
Connecting To 10.3.10.**...Could not open connection to the host, on port 5555:
Connect failed

Importing the host manually is failing :-

please suggest some inputs.

DP9.04 - Exchange 2013 backup and truncation of logs

The DP documentation says that a full backup of exchange 2013 will also truncate the logs.

How can I check that this is being done and how does the Exchange admin reduce the file sizes of the logs? They are concerned that the files are still growing....

thanks

Virtual file tapes libraries

Hi all,

I have 3 VFTLs, each of them has about 40 virtual tapes (slots), 4 drives.  Backup specification uses all VFTs. If all virtual file tapes on the 1st VFTL (in  Order devices ...) are full, HP DP wants to mount free virtual file tape from this VFTL and doesn't mount free virtual file tape from next VFTL. How to setup HP DP to use free virtual file tape from next VFTL, if all virtual file tapes from the 1st VFTL are full?

Thank you very much for your help

Automation of Tape changes (DP v7)

Scenario:

3 backup schedules:

Daily Incremental
Weekly Full
Monthly Full

Weekly job runs on friday, tapes are taken out library the following week. Retention is 4 weeks
Monthly job runs in place of a weekly, usually at the beginning of the month and the retention is 12 weeks

The hardware is a mixture of 24 and 8 tape capacity hp autoloaders.

There are over 200 seperate cells, in various difference locations globally, over a number of different time zones.

We have a system in place that is both antiquated and very labour intensive. I am hoping one of the kind folk on this forum can offer a suggestion as to how some of it might be automated / scripted.

The current method of getting the tapes changed is:

1. Admin logs on to server and opens DP
2. Selects "Devices and Media"
3. Hightlights the autoloader in the "Devices" tree and runs a barcode scan (reason is to make sure information as to what is where is current and up to date)
4. Navigate to "Media" then "Pools" then "Weekly" or "Monthly"
5. Observes the tape that has an icon that denotes it is in the library (this is the one that should be ejected)
5a. Barcode / location in library / date of expiry is then recorded in a spreadsheet by admin
5b. If there is one tape, it is then ejected (assuming the mailslot is not full)
6. If there are multiple tapes for that weekly job, all tapes that need ejecting have the same info recorded
7. That information is then relayed to someone physically at the location of the library and they eject the tape(s) and store them somewhere
8. When those tapes are removed, expired ones are put in to replace them

This operation is repeated over and over for each site until all tapes are swapped.
You can imagine that all of this has to be auditable, so all of this is recorded in a clunky excel spreadsheet. Or even worse, bits of paper (shock horror)!

So, as I see it, what we need is a bit of scripting ! I believe perl libraries are bundled with DP. We are running version 7.

What I need to be automated is the gathering of the tape barcode info.
So I need DP to do the following:

1. Weekly job finishes, DP produces a text file as such:
[jobtype(weekly/monthly)], [barcode], [library location(slot number / mailslot)], [date of expiry], [status of tape(in library/mailslot)]

2. Furthermore, if it is a single tape that needs to be ejected, DP does it automatically. If mailslot is full, then DP enters the tape in the mailslot into a magazine slot, then ejects said tape. If there is no slot free in magazines then DP does nothing with it and its information is recorded as above. In all instances, the operation that was carried must be recorded into above text file.

So the file would look something like this:

weekly, 00982klf, 5, 03/09/2016

or

monthly, 0094534,0334225,0554235, 3,9,12, 04/09/2016,05/09/2016,05/09/2016

or

weekly, 0093363, mailslot, 09/08/2016

Once that information is sat in a text file, I can then get it to my sheet and then do what i want with it.
Furthrmore I notice that DP allows the execution of scripts after jobs has run, so ideally if this were scripted it would be ran straight after the said weekly or monthly job.

Another thing - we cannot upgrade the version of DP or install any software on the servers. Whatever does the automation must be already in DP / server.

In anticipation..................

DP 9.04 - Drive based encryption

$

Hi Team,

When we enable drive based encryption in data protector 9.04 , the keys get generated when the backup runs (example day1 backup) .  we export the keys to safe location after all backup finishes.

when the next backup schedule (day2 backup) finishes , we export the keys again & save it to safe location.

so , during recovery at DR site , does it require both the keys (Day1 & Day2) to recover the data or the day2 keys only ?

change of MA for restore

Hello,

I would like to ask you how to change server where is started restore media agent (RMA) .  RMA is always started on server where was done backup what is OK when you are restoring on same host. In case that restore has to be done on different host in different datacenter then this behaviour is not suitable. Backup is done via SAN direcrtly to tape and I am using DP 9.06 on cell and client.

I didnt find any options in DP where I can change where will be started RMA proces during restore. Please let me know your suggestions or workarounds.

Thank you in advance!
