Dataprotector on suse w. TS3100 + IBM lintape driver

Hi. I am working on a new installation of Dataprotector combined with an IBM TS3100 tape drive on suse linux. The TS3100 tape drive supports hardware-encryption. In order to use the encryption feature we have to install the ibm lintape driver. This installation was successful, however the Dataprotector software does not detect the tapedrives. My question is, is dataprotector able to work with this combination? Does anyone have experience with this configuration?

Unable to install DP 9.05_106 patches

We have a new DP 9.05 cell manager installation on a Windows 2008 Microsoft cluster. I attempted to apply the DPWIN_00878 patch (CORE component for the 106 build). The wizard starts, but after just a few seconds, it just bombs out. It did not appear to do anything, but upon checking the clients from the GUI, the passive node is missing the "Cluster Server" component, and the number of patches from the 905 bundle has reduced from 14 to 12. Has anyone else experienced similar issues? Nothing is showing in the logs.

Tape Drives go into Inactive/Finish status too soon and MS Exhange Backups only uses 1 drive instead

Running HP Data Protector v9.05.  Cell Manager = Win 2008 R2.

Trying to backup MS Exchange 2010 DBs (DAG environment).    There are 8 DBs about 200gb each DB.

I set up the backup to use 8 drives "min/max = 8/8".  When the backup begins not all drives are engaged.  The backups at that point pauses for about 10-15 minutes to check Exhange logs consistency.  After a few minutes the drives that were running at the beginning go into Inactive/Finish status leaving only 1 or 2 drives running.    I'm trying to keep all drives alive but it seems Exchange does not send data fast enough for drives to stay active.   Instead of running backup in 2-3 hours it takes longer because now there's only one drive active to do 8 DBs.

Is there a setting I'm missing on my cell or on the Media Agent or the client?

Thanks in advance for any help / assistance.

MO.

(DP) Support Tip: B2D Maintenance

In Data Protector you can modify the amount of times to run unprotected media deletion operation by modifying the Global variable: DeleteUnprotectedMediaFreq.

Additionally, you can add the following Global Variable: DeleteUnprotectedMediaParallelism with the following possible values: min=0 max=256

For Example: DeleteUnprotectedMediaParallelism=4

The use of DeleteUnprotectedMediaParallelism runs omnidbutil -delete_unprotected_media -parallelism in the background based on DeleteUnprotectedMediaFreq set, so it will run the media deletion operation in paralell for different stores instead of serially.

Global File Example:

DeleteUnprotectedMediaParallelism=4

DeleteUnprotectedMediaFreq=1

# DeleteUnprotectedMediaFreq=TimesPerDay

# default: 1
# limit: 0 <= DeleteUnprotectedMediaFreq <= 24
# This period is used to run unprotected media deletion operation.
# If set to 1, operation is performed once per day (00:00),
# set to 2 two times per day (00:00,12:00), set to 3 three times
# per day (00:00, 08:00, 16:00), set to 4 four times per day
# (00:00, 06:00, 12:00, 18:00). If maximum (24) is specified,
# operation will be started every hour. If minimum (0) is specified,
# unprotected media deletion operation is not performed.

backup speed is now around 16MBps.

Now the weekend backup takes up all weekend.

Someone perhaps same experiences or ideas to speed this up?

(DP) Support Tip : Primary and Standby oracle databases need to be in the same cell

When configuring a Primary and Standby Oracle  database in Data Protector, both instances need to be in the same cell.  Having a Primary Oracle database in one cell and the Standby Oracle database in another cell is not supported.

(DP) Support tip : ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

When configuring an Oracle instance in Data Protector and the following occurs :

       ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

please try and check the full connection string with sqlplus as the same user/group on the system where the configuration is running.  Also, please use the "as sysdba" as this is required in Data Protector.   An example would be :

       sqlplus /nolog

       connect Oracleuser/password@ORASID1 as sysdba

(DP) Support Tip : Data Protector Name Resolution Testing

Data Protector is very strict in ensuring that networking name resolution is functioning
properly.  A utility is provided to check name resolution using the same algorithms that Data Protector uses.

   omnicheck -dns

This will check all DNS connections needed for normal Data Protector operation.
For more information on the command, see the omnicheck man page or the HP Data Protector Command Line Interface Reference and the HP Data Protector Troubleshooting Guide.

Already searched the GUI and not think where I can change the Home Directory destination, can anyone help me ?

IPC Read Error System error: [104 & 10054] connection reset by Peer DP 8.14

Some of our backups are failing; with error “IPC Read Error System error: [104 & 10054]” connection reset by Peer DP 8.14; error code 104 happening on Linux client and 10054 on Windows machines. We are running Cell Manager 8.14 on Windows 2012. We have two instances of DP Cell Managers. Each Cell Manager has DP clients. The two Cell Managers are not connected.

After looking into the Windows Event logs, we noticed that these error occur at the same time as Group Policy refresh on the Cell Manager host. We noticed that one of the group policies wasn't propagating properly on the DP Cell Manager host. We fixed policy. The Group policy fix seemed to have fixed the issue on one of the instances of DP. However, on the second instance, we are still encountering the "connection reset" in DP.  This is still happening at the same time as GP refresh (despite the GP propagating properly with no errors).

I read somewhere that activating the OB2IPCKEEPALIVE solves the issue. But this parameter appears not to be present in DP 8.14. Can you help with a permanent fix or how we can troubleshoot the issue as this as this has been happening for quite some time?

Oracle backup failed at 97%

Hello,

DP: 6.20

Oracle:10g

Server: 2008R2

We have a strange issue.

Since some days, our Oracle backup SOMETIMES failes à 97%. It could be 2 times OK and on fail or 1 time OK and 1 fail...

There is nothing linear. The server is uptodate and the agents too.

The error is:

Aborting connection to BSM. Abort code -2

NOTA: the issue appears after no change from us.

Could you help me please?

Apply Template to Group

Is it possible to apply a template to more than one backup spec?  I have created an exclude list and I have 300 backup specs.  Will I have to edit each spec one by one?  I have the specs grouped into groups but when I right click a group, there isn't an option to apply a template.

Thanks,

Randy

Dataprotector rman recovery on other device

I did update restoredev file and updated the device names.

"xxxxxx_Writer39" "xxxxx_Writer15" but this did not work and do we need ot restart the omnisv.

i am using DP 9.04.

Wirter39 was still used for restore even though i have put Writer15.

Does this restoredev file work in DP 9.04 and also do we need ot enable something else to enable this.

Backup VM filesystem to LTO through SAN (not ethernet)

Hi guys!!! I invoke his wisdom

I have a virtual machine (vSphere 6) with two hard drives of 2TB.
This virtual machine (fileserver) have installed the HP Data Protector client and is doing filesystem backup through the 1000 Mbps network.

The problem is, this process takes on average 40 hours. (Weekly full backup).

The virtual machine is hosted in ESXi host and its connected to the SAN network with 3PAR storage. My server HP Data Protector is with this same connection.

My question in this forum is, I have a solution to use my SAN network, assigning LUN disks between my servers to speed up my backup?

What other options do I have?

I accept any proposal including modify/update my infrastructure, etc.

Thank you very much for your time.
