I am running on DP 8.10. For some reason, my backup job using tape drive 10 wouldn't start. I manually moved a tape to the drive using the web interface, but still the job won't start. It says 'Cannot open device...None of the disk agents completed successfully. I also have tried disebaling/renabling the tape drive. I have nine other backup jobs running now.
Does it exist way to backup Oracle by DP 8.13 (using Oracle integration with rman, not Virtual Environment integration) where backup data goes via SAN, and not ethernet.
Oracle server is installed inside virtual machine in ESXi 5.5 environment, where every host in on SAN.
Cell manager and backup host is the same server (it's physical server) which is visible on SAN.
Tape libray is on SAN
In the backup task I can specify as drive only the backup host, I cannot specify drive device inside the virtual machine because VM doesn't see SAN tape drive. Only the host can see SAN tape library.
I verified backup traffic from Oracle to backup host goes by ethernet and only from bakup host to tape drives goes by SAN.
Instead... if I use VEI I can backup my VM by SAN (backup traffic from datastore to tape drive goes by SAN, not ethernet) because I presented my storage to backup host.
I'd like to know if there is way to add SAN tape drive into virtual machine so that backup can goes directly from datastore to tape drive as occurs in VEI integration.
Environment:
DP 9.05, also seen with 9.04
VMware ESXi 6 u1
vCenter Server 6 u1
The VEPA integration has been installed on the vCenter server.

Explanation:
With version 6, VMware introduced a bug that leads to a library conflict.
Reference article: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2120818
This has also been documented in the DP Integration Guide (Integration.pdf), search for 2120818.
Solution:
Until VMware has resolved this bug the following workarounds are available:
Install the vCenter and the VDDK on separate servers.
or
Copy the libldap_r.dll and liblber.dll from \Program Files\OmniBack\lib\vddk\AMD64 to \Program Files\OmniBack\bin.
Additional info:
HP generally does not recommend to install the VMware Integration component onto the vCenter Server because
this could cause severe performance issue. However, for a test environment this should be OK.
We are considering upgrading the operating system of our database server currently runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)
I wonder if the protective date requires the operating system the database is Red Hat, or you can also work with Oracle Linux (Free).

Regards,
I'm sitting in on a virtual class and the instructor suggests that the DP program files be installed in one folder and the IDB files in another; preferably another drive.
How hard core is that suggestion? What I mean is, am I going to really run into performance issues if I install all of the files in the default locations? I did change to the root of the volume that’s dedicated to DP, D:\OmniBack, but should I have made more modifications to the install paths? I have a new Cell Server installation that I could simply uninstall and reinstall. But my main cell manager has been up and running for about a month now. Should I look into doing whatever it takes to change my current installation so that the files are on different drives?
Thanks,
Randy

What I need to do
Hello,
I would like to find out backup type ( full or incremental ) of session from CLI. Really nothing more!!! It looks like very simple task but with DP it is somehow complicated. I am using DP version 7 on unix server.
So, I have tried to start following commands:
omnidb -session <sessionID>
omnidb -rpt <sessionID>
omnidb -rpt<sessionID> -detail
... but there is not backup type ( maybe too hard coding for HP developers :P )
omnidb -session <sessionID> -detail
command show backup type of objects but I have noticed that all incremental backups of SAP R/3 have backup type full !!! ( GUI shows incremental type for session and full type for objects. ) Is it bug?
Please let me know how I can determine backup type of session for script purposes.
Thank you!
If you want to avoid errors when configuring Maxdb integration in DP,
Remember that the owner of the barlist needs to be the same user as the MaxDB processes.
Why is that ?
Let say the barlist is owned by user fsoadm in group sapsys. This results in the sapdbbar.exe running as user fsoadm in group sapsys. But sapdbbar.exe calls the dbmcli.
The dbmcli starts its processes and they may run as a different user or group.
The dbmcli started process does not have permissions to access the file, a failure will occur.
The owner of the barlist needs to be the same user as the MaxDB processes.
1) Identify the owner of the MaxDB processes.
2) Change the barlist owner to the owner the the MaxDB processes.
Good luck !
If you have issues with media unavaialble for object after importing tapes from a different CM,
Try the following:
- Export both involved media
- Set in the Cell Server /opt/omni/.omnirc file the variable: OB2_IMPORT_NOSEQCHECK=1
(If .omnirc file does not exists, please copy it from .omnirc.TMPL to .omnirc and then edit it)
- Try importing both media again
- Check if the object is found now.
* Issue was obsereved in version 9.04 and also previous 8.x version.
Good luck !
It is important to NOTE that, a backup with the enable incremental flag will always leave a snapshot on the hyperv host. Executing the same backup with the disable incremental option will not delete the existing snapshot on the system. The snapshot would need to be deleted manually through powershell. Example: Get-VMSnapshot -VMName vmwithcheckpoint.domain.com -ComputerName hyper-v.domain.com| Remove-VMSnapshot
In vSphere web client GUI, clicking on "HP Data Protector" tab makes the DP GRE plug-in page hang with
"LOADING" message. This is usually caused by firewall blocking the TCP/IP port used in the communication
between the DP GRE plug-in running on the vcenter and vmwaregre agent running on the mount proxy.
Such port is dynamically selected from the hardcoded 1500-15999 port range.
Solution to this is to open this port range.
Most all Data Protector commands can be debugged when troubleshooting a problem. For example, this is an example of omnidb on 7.X :
omnidb -session -debug 1-231,233-500 DBG
For 8.X and above, use the different range as in the following example :
omnidb -session -debug 1-331,333-500 DBG
If debugs are needed for an Oracle backup, the simpliest method to generate these debugs is from the command line
using the following examples :
Data Protector 7.x - omnib -oracle_list <barlist> -debug 1-231,233-500 DBG
Data Protector 8.X and above - omnib -oracle8_list <barlist> -debug 1-331,333-500 DBG
Set the option "Display statistical info" in backup specifications so that the performance of an object is logged in the session report. If a backup performance issue should occur in the future, the information in sessions reports of good and poor performance can be compared to help isolate the bottleneck.
When enabling debugs, set a clue in the postfix to allow you to remember where you enabled debugs. For example if you enabled debugs in the trace file, you could set the debug post fix to trace_DBG. Of if the omnirc file was used, set the debug post fix to omnirc_DBG.
When getting a Test Module (TM) from Data Protector support that includes a script it is a good general rule to run the writedb prior to running the script
ex: Omnidbutil -writedb C:\IDB_DUMP
this way should the script cause any unintened problems you can always revert back to the previous IDB state very quickly by running
omnidbutil -readdb C:\IDB_DUMP
The recommendation would also hold true for any activity done which may affect the Internal Database
Hello,
I have a problem to restore individual items of GRE module for exchange of dataprotector 9.
If I restore the entire mailbox I have no problem.
I have a exchange 2010 server with sp3 and last roll up installed on windows 2008r2 sp1 with last windows updates.
Cell manager run on windows 2008r2 sp1 with last windows updates.
If I want to perform the restore of individual items and for example I choose the field "from" ,GRE returns the following error:
Failed to get items avaible for recovery
If I want to perform the restore of individual items and for example I choose the field "start dates" ,gre returns the following error:
System.Management.Automation.RemoteException: Can not process argument transformation on parameter 'StartDate'. Can not
convert value "01/20/2016" to type "System.DateTime". Error: "String was not Recognized as a valid DateTime."
+ CategoryInfo: InvalidData: (:) [Restore-Mailbox], ParameterBindin ... mationException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId: ParameterArgumentTransformationError, Restore-Mailbox
Any idea?
