Issues with SAN Transfer

I've had a crap ton of issues recently. I attempted to upgrade to 8.1 and I didn't read the fine print that it required vCenter 5.1 or better. I then had to revert to 7.01.

When I reverted to 7.01, many issues occured, but for the most part everything is working OKAY. I cannot upgrade to 7.03 as it breaks Data Protector for some reason. I have my VMFS volumes being delivered from my StoreVirtual system to my Cell Manager. In the StoreVirtual system, I have only EVER had them delivered read-only to the Cell Manager and this has worked well. When I need to restore, I then switch to read/write for restoring.

Currently I have one VM that sits on 4 different VMFS volumes. The new issue that I am seeing is that the disks are in the Cell Manager but they are delivered as "unknown." The system attempts to "initialze" the disks but it cannot do so because they are "read-only." Again, this is weird as when my 7.03 (previous version when upgraded to 8.1) was working, I didn't have this issue. Anyway, the VM I am attempting to backup, will only go NBD right now and I have a feeling it's because the disks for this VM are the "unknown" disks listed in the Storage Management snap in in Windows 2008 R2.

Can anyone provide insight? Should I switch my LUNs from the StoreVirtual to Read/Write? If I do, is it okay to allow Windows 2008 R2 to initialize them (not Format/assign drive letter)?

We have HP data Protecto A.07.00 installed on Window Server 2008 R2.

Whenever server is rebooted, Inet service is not coming up automaitcally, and we have to start it manually.

Startup Type in Services is selected "Automatically"

And I can see DP services in MSCONFIG also.

Any idea, how to overcome this problem.

have registered evaluation version of data protector 8.0. I want to run it with hyperv cluster. I cannot create backups of VMs using hyperv client types. I think this can be related with my array: P2000. According with data sheet HP DP should support this array. But I don't see any VSS agent to this array on the software DVD. How can i aquire this VSS agent?

database file system backup is not running on HP data protector. there is a mount point of 40GB from local HDD. I configured filesytstembackup for it using DP7.0. Backup starts says pending and then never changes to running. I waited for 1 hour and then aborted it.

We have EMC NetWorker since 2 years ago. We need to restore some pst files from 4 years ago that were backuped using HP DataProtector. We have the LTO4 tapes and we found a LTO4 library that can be used for the restore.

Our problem is that we don't have DataProtector anymore.

Therefore, we are thinking to install a fresh install of DP in one temporal server and conenct the library there with the tapes.

Our doubt is if with the deep scan and import of the tapes will be enough or if we will require the old DataProtector dabase to we able to restore the files.

Can you help us with that please?

I have DP 8 with patch BDL801

My jobs fails because drives is disabled. I change it to enable, but next days the same problem.

I test it My MSL60606 with 4 drives with HP Library and Tape Tools and all test is ok.

DP disabled drvies random. any idea??

DP 7.0 Network share backup not working

I'm trying to use the network share backup feature to backup files from a NAS, but for every file DP logs this error, it's not a permission problem because can the permissions on the files are the same as the folders and it can see the content of every folder.

But why it tries to read at a negative offset ?

Hello!

Ehhh, run into trouble. I need some help with our primary DC backup software, namely the HP Data Protector 8.1 (running a trial version here).

We used to run 2008 R2 with HP DAT320 internal USB tapedrive, it was working fine with DPE 5.0 Full License, however after upgrade to 2012R2 it came up that software is no longer compatible, so I uninstalled DPE 5.0 and installed DP8.1 trial as this one seems to support 2012R2 (does it?).

Here's my problem, I did initial config for tapedrive device, selected some default backup schedule, but the thing cannot write to tapedrive at all. I can't even successully format the DDS media with force option...

Also, why this software is looking so overly complicated and unintuitive when compared to 5.0? I am totally lost with it ...

DP 7.03 and SQL 2k8 Cluster

I am not able to do an integrated backup of a new SQL2k8R2 cluster. I CAN do a filesystem backup. When I try to configure a DB backup, the pull-down menu (client) under application hangs. If I manually create all of the backup config files, it still fails.

I have the registry entry for clustering on both nodes.

I ran the installer locally as administrator

I installed as cluster-aware on both nodes

I am using a domain account to run inet

The domain acct is a local admin on both nodes

The domain acct is in the ADMIN group on the cell mgr

The domain acct is in the sysadmin role in SQL Mgt Studio

I was able to import both nodes and the cluster

When running chkconf, I DO NOT get a retval 0, nothing returns

Any ideas???

Good afternoon Data Protector guru's . I am having an issue whenever I go to my Reporting and click notifications to view my backup reports that I have set up on Data Protector ver 7.0 .I get a window that is titled Manager with the red and white error symbol but no message. I have attached a screen shot. Anyone have any idea why I am getting this ?

Hello,

Up to now I have had DataProtector 6.11 with VCB Integration. Now I upgraded it to HP Data Protector 8.0 and now I'm using Virtual Environment Integration (VEPA). In previous version I can specified that during image backup only the actual used disk size was backed up. For example if I have 300 GB disk and it was 10% full, the size of image backup was 30 GB.

I would like to knwo if it is possible to use the same system in version 8.0 with VEPA integration. I'm planning to perform only full image backup on weekly bases.

I woild also like to ask if it is possible to deinstall only one peace of HP Data Protector from Client (for example MEdia Agent, ...)

Hi,

We are running DP7.03.

I think I am overlooking something. For years we made backups with DP on file-level and disater recovery. This works fine as it is, but backups as well as restores are rather slow because of all small files. We are now investigating to move to image backup for some specific machines to lower restore time. Following the manual / online help I add for example \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0 and \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE1 for a testmachine. The help states it will use VSS to 'free' open files and allow the disk to be mounted for backup. Nothing is less true:

Section \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0 cannot be locked!

Nowhere is it adding the disk to a snapshot or anything. Same happens when I take another physical disk. What use does an image backup have like this? When will NO files at all be in use on production systems? The manual / help is contradicting itself; it states to use VSS and also states 'Disk image backup fails if a file on the target system is open since Data Protector cannot lock the drive'.

We have a mix of physical machines and Hyper-V VM's, but we don't use any storage-snapshot functinality for the VM's, as for now we want a backup procedure as uniform as possible for both VM and physical. However for the VM's I know I can do that.

So basically I want to make block-level / RAW images of the machines, especially the physical ones. How to do that?

Hello All,

I've not got anything to solve or a problem that can be fixed, but just wanted to ask if anyone has managed to get DP Navigator installed yet?

I donwload the software yesterday only to find that it can only run on Redhat Linux and that the installtion instructions held in the User Guide are so inadaquate I'll be surprised if many people can install the software. There are many holes in the instructions and it is expected you are a DBA, Web administrator, Security Consultant and general Linux guru all at the same time. One thing that I found very annoying is that for the main DP product, it uses a Postgress Database, but Navigator used a MariaDB database (remember MySql before Oracle bought it??). Why does it need another database engine? God only knows but it does and it is recommended to be on yet another server. That makes one cell Cell Manager, one for the Navigator software and another one for the Navigator database...... although it can be run on the same server as Navigator.

So if you are from a windows background with little or no knowledge of the above topics, Navigator will not be for you and yet again, HP will tease you with impressive screen shots and demos while you wait for a comprehensive reporting tool for Data Protector that is easy to get running and/or works.

Seems that in order to introduce more features into the solution stack, QA and user experience was thrown out of the window as costing too much for the sake of marketing tick boxes.

Sorry for the rant HP, but with the general failure of DP 8 and now this, I'm pretty sure that many Customers will be looking at alternative solutions. What I would love though is for DP 9 to fix the upgrade capabilities into a seemless process i.e. one executable to double click and for Navigator to be much, much simpler to install.

GUI Performance is too Poor

- takes 1 minute to open

- takes 1 or more minutes to open a backup specification

- takes 10 minutes or more to open backup specification details ( directories and files )

GUI Console is a virtual machine. Virtualization software is vmware

GUI Console It has 6 GB of RAM and 2 Xeon cpu's of 3 GHZ

I want to know if there is an specific patch or specific configuration for windows 2012 GUI console

I already took a look at HP Command Line Interface Reference but still couldnt find any commands for these questions:

- Does HP update the Hash value while it is doing the backup?

- Can someone explain me what object and label are?

- How to get the list of the files in a certain backup?

- How to restore individual files from HP? Is it with omnir?

Our environment:

CM RHEL6 DP 8.11

Client HPUX 11.31 DP8.11

There is a mountpoint with > 6 million files, keep failing when we try to start a

backup (standard filesystem backup specs).

Failed message =

The BMA named "HP:Ultrium 4-SCSI_1" on host xyz reached its inactivity timeout of 8400 seconds.
The agent on host will be shutdown. "

ABORTED Disk Agent for xyz:/mountpoint "/mountpoint".

Any idea/suggestion on how to backup this mountpoint?

Backup schedule/session, 3TB Tapes for backup. I had 8 tapes in one media pool. media pool usage is Appendable and allocation is loose. Protected for 2 Weeks. No free media pools options selected. Media Type is LTO-Ultrium

Full backup on Sunday and Incremental backup on Monday-Saturday.

I tried this option Appendable. But failed.

On Sunday I had made a full backup on 1st tape. Data written to 1st tape was around 2.5TB.

On Monday I had made incremental backup. Backup data will be around 800GB. Its written backup data of 500GB to 1st tape and now the 1st tape was full.

Remaining 250GB-300GB was not written to 2nd tape. Data was missing.

I want the data to be automically written to another tape, whenever a tape is full. Please a suggest a solution.

Hi, We have the following environment:

Cell manager - windows 2008 r2, running DP 8.1

Client - Linux Centos 6.5, with installed disk agent.

The client was successfully imported into the cell. The issue is that when we try to expand its objects from "Backup Tab" the following error pop's up:

"ipc invalid hostname or ip address" - screenshot attached

Also when we try to start the backup it fails with the following error:

[Critical] From: BDA-NET@client3.domain.com "client3.domain.com [/CONFIGURATION]" Time: 6/2/2014 12:25:02 AM Cannot connect to Media Agent on system cellserver1.domain.com, port 56324 (IPC Invalid Hostname or IP Address) => aborting.

We have Successfull ping and telnet on port 5555, via IP and FQDN between the client and the cell.

Any assistance identifying the issue will be well appreciated. Thank you in advance!
