Hi there,
I can do successful full backups of virtual machines using the Virtual Environment integration with latest (8.12) patches loaded. I have "changed block tracking" on in VMWare and data protector and everything appears to work as it should.
However, I cannot restore. After a 10 minute delay I get:
[Major] From: RSM@xyzback2.xyz.co.uk "" Time: 20/06/2014 11:03:07
[62:1021] Bar restore session was started but no client connected
in 600 seconds.
Aborting session!
I notice that a dbsm.exe process belonging to Data Protector goes to 100% CPU as soon as you start the restore, and stays at 100% CPU even after the session has been aborted. It's not easy to kill it - it reappears, rebooting the cell manager is the best way to get rid of it.
It does not make a difference whether you try to restore directly back to VMWare i.e. "restore to datacenter" or if you just try to restore the files locally on the cell manager i.e. "restore to directory". Same symptoms either way.
I did have the Virtual Environment integration backing up and restoring successfully - I think what may have broken it is upgrading my VCenter server from 5.5.0 to 5.5.0 update 1b (latest at the time of writing).
The cell manager is on Windows Server 2008 R2, virtualised inside VMWare. The backup device is a Quantum tape library connected to a physical machine with the data protector media agent. Data Protector still happily backs up and restores ordinary filesystems via disk agent - just the Virtual Environment integration is broken.
Does anyone have any helpful thoughts please?
Thanks,
Matt.
