Data Protector Acronyms

Working in the Response Center through the years, I have found that sometimes, acronyms are referred to without any real context

First, there are three parts to any Data Protector cell:

- The Cell Manager, also known as a Session Manager when running Backups and Restores

- The Disk Agent, that is, what is being backed up. There may be eithere a File system backup or a      Application   Integration Backup, but, both are Disk Agents

- The Media Agent, what the Backup is going to, or the Restore is coming from

Cell Manager

• bsm - Backup Session Manager
• rsm - Restore Session Manager
• dbsm - DataBase Session Manager
• msm - Media Session Manager
• csm - Copy Session Manager
• asm - Administrative Session Manager

Note: 'asm' is also a acronym for Oracle Automatic Storage Management

File System Disk Agent

The Cell Manager host also can be a Client that runs Disk Agents.

• vbda - Volume (filesystem) Backup Disk Agent
• rbda - Raw (disk image or bit copy) Backup Disk Agent
• dbbda - Internal DataBase Backup Disk Agent
• vrda - Volume Restore Disk Agent

• ob2bar_e2010 - Post-Exchange 2010 Backup and REstore

Media Agent

The Cell Manager host also can be a Client that runs Media Agents.

• bma - backup media agent
• bma-ndmp -NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol)
• rma - restore media agent
• rma-ndmp - Restore Media Agent that understands NDMP

So, for example

By: UMA@xyz@Changer0:0:7:1

Message from the Restore Media agent (RMA) on the system 'xyz', saying the Utility Media Agent (UMA) is loading the tape from slot 9 to the device having the SCSI path Tape1:0:7:0C

Another example

Another example
